A USDA-Benefit Enforcement Surge Mixes Allegations, Pleas, Sentences and Restitution Orders

Justice, USDA and USDA’s inspector general reported actions against more than 40 defendants from September 1 through October 21, involving nearly $45 million in alleged or proven intended losses, including nearly $42 million tied to SNAP. The underlying cases are at different legal stages: an Ohio indictment alleges about $29.7 million in loss; a Florida defendant pleaded guilty to obtaining about $1.75 million in improper crop-insurance indemnities and agreed to about $1.51 million in restitution for other programs; and an Oregon case produced sentences and $2.4 million in restitution orders. The aggregate is not a single audited loss finding, conviction total or amount already recovered.
