September State Labor Markets Show Limited Payroll Breadth

BLS reported that September unemployment rates fell significantly in five states and were stable in 45 states and the District of Columbia; the national rate was 4.2% and changed little over both the month and year. Payroll employment increased significantly in only New Jersey and South Carolina, declined in Wisconsin, and was essentially unchanged in 47 states and the District. Over twelve months, seven states recorded significant payroll gains while the District recorded a loss. The release shows an uneven state-level labor market rather than a nationwide collapse or boom. State estimates are preliminary and the household and establishment surveys measure different populations, so revisions and the next national employment report remain important.
